Chandan Yatra, a 21-day boating ritual of the lords, concludes in Puri

Puri, May 19 (UNI) The Chandan Yatra, a twenty-one-day-long boating ritual dedicated to the deities, concluded on Monday with the observance known as Bhaunri.
As per tradition, Madanmohan—the representative idol of Lord Jagannath—along with Bhudevi, Shree Devi, Ramakrushna, and the Panch Mahadeva (five forms of Lord Shiva), commenced their ceremonial journey from the temple. The deities were carried in six separate palanquins along the Grand Road (Badadanda) to the Narendra Tank, located approximately 1.5 kilometer from the temple, for the boating ritual.
The palanquins, richly decorated, were borne on the shoulders of servitors known as Biman Badus. Leading the procession was a temple music ensemble playing devotional tunes from Geet Govinda and Odissi bhajans.
Youths from various Jaaga Ghars (traditional martial arts schools) accompanied the procession, showcasing their skills along the Badadanda. Devotees participated in the bathing rituals and later joined a grand feast in celebration.
Upon arrival at Narendra Tank, the deities were given a ceremonial bath with sandalwood paste and aromatic water to provide a cooling effect. They were then placed aboard two large swan-shaped boats, named Nanda and Bhadra, and enjoyed a boat ride lasting until late evening. Following the ritual, the deities returned to the temple with the same grandeur and ceremony as their departure.
In light of last year’s tragic incident during the Bhaunri observance, where 17 people lost their lives due to a firecracker accident, the administration implemented stringent security measures this year. Seven platoons of police personnel were deployed around the Narendra Tank and along the Badadanda. Precautionary steps were taken to prevent accidents and drowning incidents.
Lifeguards and fire service personnel were stationed at key points throughout the festival site. A first-aid center, complete with ambulance services, was also set up.
Vinit Agarwal, the Superintendent of Police, and Aravind Padhee, Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple, were present to oversee the arrangements.
