Mizoram logs 136 Dengue cases till April, no deaths reported

Aizawl, May 19 (UNI) Mizoram has recorded 136 confirmed cases of Dengue between January and April this year, though no deaths have been reported during the period, officials from the state’s National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) said on Monday.
As many as 2,009 samples were tested for suspected Dengue infections in the first four months of 2025, of which 136 tested positive, the officials said.
They noted that the number of Dengue cases in the state has remained relatively low so far this year compared to 2024, when a total of 744 cases were reported and one death occurred in Aizawl district. During the same period last year, 9,342 samples were tested. A vast majority of infections continue to be reported in Aizawl district, especially in the northern parts of the city.
The state’s first ever Dengue cases were detected in 2012, when six individuals were found infected. Since then, the number of Dengue cases has shown a general upward trend, though the figures dropped sharply during 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 lockdowns, when community mobility was severely restricted.
A resurgence was witnessed in 2022, when 1,868 cases and five deaths were recorded. The following year, 2023, saw the highest ever number of Dengue cases in Mizoram with 2,060 confirmed infections out of 12,949 samples tested, resulting in two fatalities. One more death was reported in 2024, bringing the cumulative Dengue death toll in the state to eight.
Meanwhile, officials added that no Chikungunya cases have been detected in the state during the current year so far. Six samples were tested between January and April but none returned positive. In contrast, 2024 saw four cases detected from among 248 samples tested, with the majority of infections reported from Lunglei district in south Mizoram.
