Compassion biggest identity of a doctor: Yogi

Gorakhpur, Apr 18 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said that the biggest identity of a doctor is his compassion and If he lacks compassion, then a thought should be given whether he deserves to be called a doctor or not.

Addressing the gathering after performing the Bhoomi Pujan of Vishram Sadan (night shelter) with a capacity of 500 people in the campus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Gorakhpur, the CM said, "A doctor's identity is from compassion. The compassion of a doctor can cure half the illness of a serious patient."

He advised the doctors of medical institutions to avoid the tendency of unnecessarily referring patients to higher centres and develop the habit of taking risks in providing critical care to the patient.

The night shelter, to be built for Rs 44.34 crore, will be the largest in eastern UP. It is being constructed with the CSR fund of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.

At the foundation stone laying ceremony, Yogi said that any medical institution is also a centre of compassion through the behaviour of the doctor. "If a patient comes to get admitted to this centre of empathy, then there are at least 3 or 4 attendants with him. In eastern UP, sometimes the number of attendants goes up to 10. In such a situation, there should be a good arrangement of shelter for the attendant accompanying the patient," he said.

He said that with the foundation stone laying of the 500-bed Vishram Sadan, Gorakhpur AIIMS has achieved a new milestone.

The CM said that the foundation stone of AIIMS Gorakhpur was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2016. "In 2019, the first match of AIIMS Gorakhpur took admission and in 2021 PM Modi inaugurated this AIIMS. The seed that was planted in Gorakhpur in the form of AIIMS in 2016, today it has become a banyan tree and has become a centre to give a new life to thousands of victims to achieve the goal of health," he said.

He said that it seemed like a mere fantasy that AIIMS would be in Gorakhpur. "We had been raising this voice since 2003. At that time Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the PM of the country. AIIMS would also be set up outside Delhi, for this he had announced six AIIMS. But, after that this process stopped," he said.

Yogi said that after Narendra Modi became the PM in 2014, the mantra of no discrimination, 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' is being seen in the field of health services as well. "22 new AIIMS have been built or are being built in the country in the 10 years of PM Modi's tenure. Gorakhpur AIIMS is also one of them. The voice raised in 2003 for AIIMS in Gorakhpur was given shape by PM Modi in 2016," he said.

He said that currently the occupancy of AIIMS Gorakhpur is 75 to 80 percent. "The relatives of the patients admitted to ICU, Critical Care and Trauma Centre cannot stay with them. They have to stay outside. There will be at least 1,200 people in this campus who are forced to go outside and live on the tracks, on the side of the roads or at some other place to hide their heads," he said.

He said that if a person is forced to bear the heat, cold or rain in the open, then it seems inhuman. "In such a situation, it is necessary that we create our human form and think about those people who are connected here with the pain of their patients. We should make such a system in the form of Vishram Sadan where the attendants can stay on minimum user charge and have the facility of a cheap canteen," he said.

The CM said that during his visit to SGPGI in Lucknow about one and a half years ago, seeing a large number of people on the roads, issued directives to build an attendant shelter home for their arrangements. "It came to mind that some centres should be made for patient attendants in SGPGI, KGMU, BHU and AIIMS Gorakhpur. When efforts were made, the Petroleum Ministry gave three night shelters for SGPGI, KGMU and RML. With the cooperation of the Power Ministry, a night shelter was approved for AIIMS Gorakhpur," he said.

He mentioned the subsidised model for food for attendants started in BRD Medical College 20 years ago during the peak time of encephalitis. He said that there was a time when BRD Medical College was an encephalitis hot spot.

He said, "Patients from all over eastern UP used to come here. There was a lot of chaos. People did not have food to eat. At that time, we had made arrangements in collaboration with a voluntary organisation. Arrangements for dal, rice, roti, vegetables were started for attendants for eight rupees. Even today, the patient's attendant is getting the facility of full meal of dal, rice, vegetables and roti for Rs 10 at BRD Medical College and Guru Gorakhnath Hospital."

Yogi expressed the expectation that AIIMS should provide the facility of specialist doctors through tele consultation in medical colleges and district hospitals of nearby districts. For this, he mentioned the system model created by giving training through SGPGI, KGMU and RML during the Corona period and said that later every district got the facility of ICU and ventilator.

He said that more and more people can be given relief by using technology like tele consultation. He said that institutions like AIIMS, whose OPD has reached 4,000 today, if all the super specialty faculty come here, then the same OPD will go to 10,000.

He said, "In such a situation, AIIMS Gorakhpur should become the medical hub of eastern UP on the lines of SGPGI and tele consultation should be given from here by connecting other medical colleges. This will save the common patient from running around."

The CM advised the doctors of government medical institutions to avoid the tendency of unnecessarily referring patients to Lucknow. He said that in many of the districts where medical colleges have been built, no risk is taken to provide critical care or trauma facilities to the patient.

He said, "The patient is referred to Lucknow. All this should stop. One has to get used to taking risks while providing critical care. Every patient is the basis of new experience and knowledge for the doctor. In such a situation, they have to give time to the patient. We should not limit ourselves to ten or fifteen patients. It should be remembered that all the good research that has been done in the world has been done by those who have the ability to collect maximum data."
