COMSO seeks independent probe on death of nursing student in Manipur

Shillong, May 16 (UNI) The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (COMSO) has demanded an independent judicial inquiry into the tragic death of a nursing student at Imphal’s Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur.
Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak, a 21-year-old fourth-semester BSc student, was found hanging in her hostel room on May 14.
In a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, COSMO said, “This heartbreaking incident has not only shaken the confidence of students and their families, but has also raised critical questions about institutional ethics, sensitivity, and inclusiveness. Justice for Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak is not only a matter of legal necessity—it is a moral obligation that calls for collective reflection and remedial action.”
COMSO also demanded an independent judicial commission of enquiry headed by a sitting or retired High Court judge with adequate legal, forensic, and psychological expertise to determine the real causes and contributing factors behind Marak’s untimely death.
“The absence of a transparent and independent judicial inquiry has only intensified the grief, suspicion, and trauma experienced by students, parents, the Garo community, and the public at large,” the organisation said.
Moreover, COMSO also sought protection and support for students, witnesses, and whistleblowers, including those willing to testify, and the temporary suspension of any officials or staff members found complicit until the inquiry concludes.
“Justice for Abiel Salchiana Ch Marak is not only a matter of legal necessity—it is a moral obligation that calls for collective reflection and remedial action,” COMSO said while urging your kind intervention in the spirit of justice, equity, and the constitutional right to life, dignity, and equal protection under law.
