Congress, BJP pay separate tributes at memorial of Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair, former AICC president, in Palakkad

Palakkad, Apr 24 (UNI) Leaders and workers of the Congress and BJP paid separate floral tributes at the Smrithi Mandapam (memorial) of former AICC president Sit Chettur Sankaran Nair, on the occasion of his 91st death anniversary at Mankara, near Ottapalam, on Thursday.
BJP workers led by National Executive member and former State president PK Krishnadas and Palakkad (east) district President Prasanth Sivan, arrived at the memorial around 7.30 am, after walking around 1.5 km through paddy fields. They paid floral tributes and placed BJP party flags around the memorial site.
The BJP also organised a public function at Mankara town on the commemorative day. Krishnadas inaugurated the function and accused the Congress of neglecting the legacy of the first Keralite AICC president

He claimed the Congress remembered Chettur Sankaran Nair only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted Nair's contributions to India at a function held at Haryana.
About an hour later, around 0830 hrs, Congress workers led by Palakkad MP, VK Sreekandan and District Congress Committee (DCC) president A Thankappan visited the memorial . They reportedly removed the floral offerings and BJP party flags, before placing Congress flags and paying their own tributes.
After this function, Sreekandan, MP told newspersons "BJP did one good thing in remembering a national leader." However, he emphasised that Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair was never associated with communal politics and remained a committed Congressman through his life.
Meanwhile, KPCC president K Sudhakaran, MP inaugurated the State-level function of Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair's 91st death anniversary at DCC office in Kannur in the morning.
Political experts said, the BJP is now embracing Chettur Sankaran Nair, first Keralite AICC president, after national leaders like Sardar Vallabbhai Patel and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Sastri.
It was on April 20 that Union Minister Suresh Gopi visited the relatives of late Chettur Sankaran Nair at their house at Chandranagar in Palakkad and later visited the Palat house (ancestral house of Sankaran Nair) at Ottapalam along with BJP local leaders, after Prime Minister's Narendra Modi's comments on Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair.
