CPI(M) calls for dharna against police detention of HCU students

Hyderabad, Mar 31 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] state committee has strongly condemned the Telangana government’s police action against students and union leaders of Hyderabad Central University (HCU).
The party has called for a dharna at 1100 hours on Tuesday, at the main gate of HCU, urging large-scale participation from the public and democratic forces, a party statement said on Monday.
CPI(M) is demanding the immediate release of detained students, including student leader Erram Naveen, who was allegedly arrested and remanded without due process.
The party criticised the Congress-led state government for attempting to sell 400 acres of university land instead of strengthening the education system. Students have been protesting under the leadership of the Hyderabad Central University Students’ Union to safeguard the land for the university’s development.
However, in a controversial move, the state government deployed a heavy police force to the university’s east campus, accompanied by bulldozers, to level land beyond the 400 acres designated for sale.
During the operation, around 60 students, including female students, were detained and taken to Madhapur, Raidurg, and Gachibowli police stations, where they were held until 1000 hours.
Reports indicate that one student sustained a head injury in the police action, while female students were allegedly manhandled, their clothes torn, and some suffered scratches severe enough to cause bleeding.
Furthermore, students were allegedly coerced into promising not to protest again before being released on video recording, an act CPI(M) has deemed highly objectionable and undemocratic.
CPI(M) has condemned the Congress government’s actions, accusing it of contradicting its proclaimed commitment to democratic values. The party has demanded an immediate halt to the land sale, withdrawal of cases against students, and the unconditional release of all those arrested.
