Drug trafficking: Mizoram Police seize 2 crore meth pil near Myanmar border

Aizawl, May 5 (UNI) Mizoram Police has seized 236.33 kilograms of methamphetamine — equivalent to more than two crore tablets and valued at over Rs 30 crore — in Champhai district near the Myanmar border, in what officials described as the state’s biggest-ever single meth haul.
The seizure was made at Vanzau village under the jurisdiction of Dungtlang Police Station following a late Sunday night road interception.
Acting on specific intelligence, police stopped a vehicle travelling from Thinghrangkawn to Bungzung, both border villages in Champhai district. Upon inspection, they found the contraband concealed inside the vehicle.
The two occupants of the car— Laltanpuia, 30, and Vanropuia, 27 — both residents of Vengthar in Champhai town, were arrested on the spot.
The vehicle, bearing an Aizawl registration number, was impounded and brought to the police station, where a case under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered.
Police officials estimate the local market value of the seized drugs at around Rs 30.72 crore. Preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was smuggled from Myanmar and was intended for markets outside Mizoram.
“There is no evidence of methamphetamine abuse within the state,” a senior police officer said.
“These drugs are usually trafficked through Mizoram for consumption elsewhere, including metropolitan cities and international markets where demand is rising.”
Known for its synthetic stimulant effects, methamphetamine —also referred to as “speed” or “party pills”— has increasingly become a trafficking concern along the Indo-Myanmar border. Security agencies have stepped up surveillance in recent months as Mizoram continues to be a key transit route for narcotics originating from the Golden Triangle region. UNI ZS SSP
