GST remains tool for economic progress, not uncertainty: Telangana Governor

Hyderabad, Mar 15 (UNI) Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma emphasised that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) continues to be a vital instrument for economic progress rather than a source of uncertainty.
Speaking at the inauguration of a summit titled "The Role of Executive and Judiciary in Shaping GST During Challenging Times," organised by the GST Committee of the Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FTCCI) at a private hotel in Banjara Hills on Saturday, the Governor highlighted the crucial need for seamless coordination between the executive and judiciary.
Governor Varma underscored that the executive's role lies in implementing and refining GST policies, while the judiciary ensures constitutional integrity and fair dispute resolution. He quoted Kautilya, stating, "Where justice is administered, there stands the foundation of Dharma and the strength of the king," reinforcing the need for balanced governance.
He further likened effective taxation to "a bee collecting honey from a flower without disturbing its petals," stressing that taxation should be efficient yet non-intrusive.
Justice SVN Bhatti, who also addressed the summit, asserted that the judiciary's role is to ensure fair treatment for both taxpayers and the government.
Meanwhile, V. Sridharan delivered a keynote address, sharing insights into legal interpretations and GST-related judgements.
Telangana's Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Ms. K. Haritha, urged taxpayers to take advantage of the government's one-time interest and waiver scheme by settling tax dues before March 31, 2025.
FTCCI President Dr. Suresh Kumar Singhal highlighted the increasing significance of the executive and judiciary in navigating GST complexities. Additionally, Irshad Ahmed, Chairman of FTCCI's GST and Customs Committee, stressed the importance of creating a predictable and transparent tax regime to reduce compliance burdens and promote business stability.
The summit brought together over 250 prominent figures, including policymakers, legal experts, tax professionals, and industry leaders, to deliberate on key GST challenges and solutions.
