HCBA members go on indefinite strike against repatriation of Justice Verma

Prayagraj, Mar 25 (UNI) Members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) on Tuesday started an indefinite strike in protest against the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation to repatriate Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Verma to the Allahabad High Court.
The advocates of the Allahabad High Court expressed their views against the repatriation by putting up a tent outside Gate Number 3. They raised slogans declaring a do-or-die protest against Justice Verma, from whose house bundles of currency notes were allegedly found.
The advocates performed yagya outside the gate and are reciting Hanuman Chalisa. However, Litigants are not being stopped from entering the court. General Secretary of HCBA Vikrant Pandey said that yagya was performed and Hanuman Chalisa is being recited for the good sense of the judges of the SC.
He said that they would not return to work till their demands were met. "We will not allow Justice Verma to sit in Allahabad HC under any circumstances. Photo affidavit centers will also be closed from Wednesday," he said.
HCBA President Anil Tiwari said that on receiving the information of Justice Verma's transfer to Allahabad HC after the court was closed on Monday evening, the association called an emergency meeting of the office-bearers at his residence late in the evening and discussed the matter.
He said, "The lawyers supported the strike and announced an indefinite strike. It was decided in the meeting of the officials that until the decision of transfer by the SC Collegium is not withdrawn, the advocates here will abstain from judicial work."
It may be noted that on March 14, a video of bundles of currency notes being burnt in a fire in a room of Justice Verma came to light. After that, on March 20, a proposal was passed to transfer him to the Allahabad HC.
Against the proposal of the SC Collegium to transfer Justice Verma to Allahabad HC, the HCBA called a General House (General Meeting) on Monday and passed a proposal demanding an impeachment motion against him. Along with this, a proposal to conduct an Enforcement Directorate and CBI investigation against the judge was also passed.
The proposal will be sent to the Chief Justice of the SC. A resolution was passed in the General House that the HCBA opposes the transfer of Justice Verma anywhere. The decisions given by Justice Verma in the Allahabad High Court or the Delhi High Court should be reconsidered.
It was also demanded in the meeting that Justice Verma should not be transferred to any other High Court till the investigation is completed and the Uncle Judge Syndrome (nepotism and favouritism) in the appointment of the judges should be ended, judges belonging to the family and relatives of the judge should be transferred to other HCs.
