Heatwave intensifies in HP; water shortage deepens in Shimla

Shimla, Apr 7 (UNI) Heatwave conditions continue to prevail across the foothills and mid-hills of Himachal Pradesh, with Una recording the highest temperature in the state at a scorching 36.8°C, which is 4.0°C above normal.
Shimla, the state capital, also experienced unusually warm weather, registering 26.0°C, nearly 6.1°C above normal, the warmest for the season so far.
Other regions, including Sundernagar (33.2°C), Bhuntar (33.2°C), and Mandi (33.6°C), are also witnessing persistent heatwave conditions. The rising temperatures have intensified concerns over water scarcity in the region, especially in Shimla.
According to SJPNL (Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Ltd.), water supply is dwindling with every passing day. The total water received in Shimla during the last 24 hours (till 6:00 AM on April 7) was 42.72 MLD, which is 11.50 MLD less than the normal daily requirement. Significant shortfalls were recorded from two key supply sources — Sanjouli tank received 1.5 MLD less, while Dhalli tank received 10 MLD less.
In comparison, the previous day (April 6) recorded only 38.74 MLD, showing a slight improvement, yet still well below required levels.
Mayor Surinder Chauhan highlighted the growing distress, mentioning that areas not connected with the Sanjouli and Dhalli water supply schemes are not receiving water regularly.
With the heatwave showing no signs of relenting and temperatures projected to remain high, the crisis is expected to escalate unless immediate measures are taken to ensure stable water distributions.
