Helen Keller's 145th birth anniversary to be celebrated in Hyd on June 27 with cultural events and awards

Hyderabad, June 20 (UNI) The 145th birth anniversary of Helen Keller, a global icon who championed the rights of people with disabilities and women, will be commemorated with cultural celebrations and an awards ceremony on June 27 at Sundarayya Vigyan Kendra in Hyderabad.

The announcement was made by Helen Keller Vidyasansthalam Chairman P. Umar Khan and National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) State General Secretary M. Adivaya during a meeting held at the Chikkadapalli Sangam State Office on Friday.

Telangana Cultural Saradhi Chairman Dr. Gummadi Vennela, Director of the Disabled Welfare Department B. Sailaja, and NPRD National General Secretary Muraleedharan are also expected to participate in the event.

The celebration will also feature the Ramija B. Memorial Awards Ceremony, where 30 outstanding students, poets, and writers will be honoured for their achievements and contributions.

Speaking on the occasion, the organisers recalled Helen Keller’s lifelong commitment to the rights of the deaf and visually impaired, highlighting her global efforts to promote education and empowerment. They also paid tribute to Ramija B, who founded Helen Keller Educational Institutions for the deaf in Kadapa and Hyderabad nearly 40 years ago.

“These institutions have enabled thousands of hearing-impaired individuals to receive higher education and secure dignified positions in society,” said P Umar Khan. “Inspired by Helen Keller’s ideals, we continue to work for equal opportunities for the deaf and speech-impaired.”

The meeting was also attended by NPRD State President K Venkat, Treasurer R. Venkatesh, and Principals of Helen Keller Institutions, Dr Arumugam and Anjaiah.
