Himachal Cabinet approves key initiatives for green cover, green belts

Shimla, May 19 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Council of ministers today decided to involve corporates to plant trees on degraded forests and CSIR to increase the state's green cover.
In its latest meeting, the state Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, approved significant measures to boost the state's green cover and improve environmental sustainability.
The Cabinet greenlit the Mukhya Mantri Green Adoption Yojna, a new policy that allows private entrepreneurs to plant trees on degraded forest land under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This ambitious programme aims to increase the state's actual forest areas and enhance its environmental footprint.
Additionally, the Cabinet made a notable decision to create a green belt in the Taradevi forest areas. With the help of the Central Institute of Subtropical Forestry (CISR), this project seeks to increase green cover and strengthen the ecological balance of the region.
To further protect the natural environment, the Cabinet approved amendments to the Himachal Pradesh Town and Country Planning Rules, 2014. The amendments will regulate construction activities on the valley side in Shimla, ensuring that new buildings are constructed at least one meter below road level. This move is designed to preserve the aesthetic value of the valley and protect the region’s visual appeal for both locals and visitors.
The Cabinet also decided to include the forest area surrounding Mata Tara Devi Temple in Shimla district within the green zone of the Shimla Development Plan. This step aims to ensure sustainable development while safeguarding the area's natural beauty.
These decisions are part of the state government’s ongoing commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development. UNI ML SSP
