Himachal: Family of deceased HPPCL engineer alleges bias, misdirection in SIT probe

Shimla, Apr 14 (UNI) In a dramatic twist in the ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of HPPCL Chief Engineer Vimal Negi, his family has openly expressed deep distrust towards the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the case.
What was initially registered as a suspicious death—possibly suicide or even murder—has now become the subject of growing public scrutiny, as the family levels serious accusations of bias, inaction, and deliberate misdirection against the authorities.
Vimal Negi was found dead under unclear circumstances, sparking concerns about possible foul play.
His family maintains that Negi was a victim of sustained harassment by senior officials within HPPCL, a claim that has not been adequately pursued by investigators. Instead, they say, the focus of the investigation has disturbingly shifted towards probing Negi’s personal life, financial assets, and now even his family members.
“It is shameful that after registering the case on March 19, the police failed to act against those who harassed my husband,” said Kiran Negi, wife of the deceased.
“Rather than gathering evidence against the named officials, they are busy combing through our family’s bank accounts and property records.”
Surendra Negi, Vimal’s elder brother, added that this deflection only serves to shield the real culprits.
“There is a well-known pattern of abuse by top HPPCL officials towards junior staff. Vimal faced immense pressure and humiliation for standing up to corruption. Now, the investigation is being twisted to target the victim and his loved ones.”
According to the family, the investigation initially showed some promise, but only until the accused were granted anticipatory bail.
After that, they say, the SIT’s approach grew noticeably lax and started raising suspicions.
“Had the police acted with integrity from day one, justice wouldn’t be so far out of reach,” said Kiran.
In a fresh development, the family claims that the SIT is now turning its focus onto them—raising new concerns about potential intimidation or an attempt to discredit their calls for justice.
“The system has failed us,” said a family statement.
“We have completely lost faith in the Shimla Police and the state administration. This is no longer an impartial investigation—it’s damage control for the powerful.”
As pressure mounts, the case has ignited fresh demands for a truly independent and transparent probe into the death of an officer widely known for his honesty and integrity.
