HYC storms NEIGRIHMS Director’s office, seeks 80:20 gender ratio

Shillong, Apr 4 (UNI) The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), a pressure group in Meghalaya, on Friday stormed the office of the Director of North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Prof. Nalin Metha after the expiry of the seven-day ultimatum given to him over their four-point charter of demands.
The HYC is demanding an 80:20 female to male ratio in the recruitment process for the recent advertisement for recruitment of 107 nursing officers in this central medical institute.
In a memorandum submitted to Director of NEIGRIHMS on March 24, the HYC had set seven-day deadline to have a gender specific ratio in the recruitment process for nurses.
The Council also demanded implementation of 44 per cent reservation for ST as per OM of the Ministry of Personnel in which NEIGRIHMS has taken some steps.
Since NEIGRIHMS authorities didn’t respond to the ultimatum, the HYC stormed Metha’s office chamber demanding him to vacate his office immediately.
Mehta and his officials were forced to come out of the administrative block despite the private security personnel tried to prevent the HYC members to enter the Metha’s office chamber.
“We have submitted a memorandum in this regards since March 24 and the seven-day ultimatum given to you has ended today. Since there was no response from your office, we have no other option but to stage this protest,” HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem told Metha outside the Director’s administrative block.
However, Metha told Synrem that the institute was willing to cooperate and comply with the demands and was preparing a letter in response to the same.
“You should have told us like that, but you didn’t even communicate anything to the organisation despite the ultimatum served,” Synrem replied to Metha.
Synrem Sai’s the 80:20 gender ratio between female and male nurses is implemented across some of the top medical institutions of the country, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, and others.
He said, there should be gender balance at the institute when it comes to the nursing profession, or else the institute runs the risk of being overwhelmed by male nurses.
“It’s concerning for the community as a whole if male nurses dominate in several departments such as maternity and paediatrics care,” Synrem argued.
The HYC demanded that NEIGRIHMS issue a corrigendum or an addendum to its previous advertisement while mentioning the gender ratio for the recruitment process.
The Council also demanded that the examinations for the recruitment must be conducted within Meghalaya and ensure that the locals have an opportunity to apply for the posts.
