Japan: Three Chinese nationals arrested for smuggling protected hermit crabs into suitcases

Tokyo, May 11 (UNI) Three Chinese nationals have been arrested by Japanese police after thousands of protected hermit crabs were discovered in multiple suitcases on a Japanese holiday island, media reports said.
Three suspects, Liao Zhibin, Song Zhenhao, and Guo Jiawei, were arrested on Wednesday on the Amami Islands for allegedly possessing 160 kilograms (353 pounds) of live crustaceans, CNN reported.
According to police, a hotel worker in Amami, a city on the island of Amami Oshima, alerted environmental authorities after spotting something suspicious about the suitcases the three men had asked hotel staff to watch.
“They heard rustling sounds coming from a suitcase that was being held in storage,” a police officer told CNN.
Officers later arrived at the hotel and found the spiral-shelled hermit crabs stuffed into six suitcases, according to police.
Three men were arrested on Wednesday after returning to a hotel for possessing crustaceans without proper authorisation, according to Kyodo News.
Police did not provide more detail on the exact species but told CNN on Friday that the hermit crabs seized are classified as “national natural monuments” in Japan because of their cultural and scientific value and are protected under Japanese law.
