Kerala: Guv terms SC ruling as overreach by judiciary

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 13 (UNI) Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has termed the Supreme Court's recent ruling on setting timeline for Governors to deal with bills cleared by state assemblies as overreach by judiciary.
The Governor responded to the SC ruling on the Tamil Nadu Governor's action in dealing with the bills during an interview with a newspaper on Saturday.
Opining that the court which heard the Tamil Nadu government's case should have referred to a Constitution bench, he said it is up to the Parliament to decide on such matters.
Meanwhile, ruling CPI(M) in Kerala and Opposition Congress have criticised the Governor for his comment against the SC ruling on the matter.
CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby and Opposition leader in Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan have opined that the SC has the power to review the validity of even the constitutional amendments made by Parliament.
AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal said, "The Supreme Court delivered a tight slap to the Centre on the limits of the Governor’s powers, but clearly, some self-proclaimed 'constitutional authorities' didn’t get the memo."
"Instead, they’ve doubled down on defiance and are parroting Delhi’s script, desperate to do what they can’t through the ballot: control the states through the back door," he added.
"Sorry, the SC ruling is not a suggestion - it must be adhered to," he felt.
