KIMS hospital organises DVT awareness walk, highlights prevention and risks

Hyderabad, Mar 23 (UNI) To raise awareness about Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and its prevention, KIMS Hospital organized a DVT Awareness Walk at Jala Vihar, Necklace Road, on Sunday.
The event, held at 0700 hours was attended by Minister Raja Narasimha as the chief guest, along with Dr Bollineni Bhaskar Rao, CMD of KIMS Group, and eminent doctors Dr Narendranath Meda, Dr Nagendraparvathaneni, Dr Francis Sridhar, and Dr. Jagadessh.
D Bhaskar Rao emphasised that DVT remains a major health risk worldwide, even in developed countries like the U.S., where 900,000 people are affected annually, leading to 100,000 deaths. He urged the public to take preventive measures such as daily walking, early detection, and medical intervention to reduce the risks associated with the condition.
He further pointed out that while DVT is more common among the elderly, sedentary lifestyles, prolonged travel, and extended bed rest have led to an increase in cases among younger individuals. He highlighted the 2025 Blood Clot Awareness Month theme, "Do Your Part to Stop the Clot: A Call to Action!", encouraging active participation from the public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers in prevention efforts.
Dr Narendranath Meda, Consultant Vascular Surgeon at KIMS, warned that DVT can cause life-threatening complications such as Pulmonary Embolism (PE). Many people fail to recognize the symptoms, mistaking them for simple leg swelling. Common signs of DVT include leg pain, swelling, discolouration, and warmth. Risk factors include a history of DVT, stroke, pregnancy, obesity, major surgeries, ageing, and prolonged travel. Diagnosis is typically done through D-Dimer blood tests, ultrasound, and venography.
Experts at the event stressed that early detection and proper treatment can significantly reduce fatalities. Advanced treatments such as Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis can help dissolve clots and improve patient outcomes.
The awareness walk served as a reminder of the importance of public education, lifestyle modifications, and medical vigilance in preventing and managing DVT effectively.
