KTR slams Cong for student repression, questions Rahul’s silence on HCU land issue

Hyderabad, Mar 31 (UNI) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K T Rama Rao (KTR) has strongly criticized the Congress-led Telangana government for its crackdown on Hyderabad Central University (HCU) students protesting against alleged land encroachment.
Addressing the media at Telangana Bhavan, KTR condemned the police action and questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence on the issue despite his past environmental activism.
HCU students approached KTR, alleging that the state government is attempting to seize 400 acres of university land under the guise of development. KTR assured them of BRS’s full support, accusing Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s administration of prioritizing real estate gains over education and environmental conservation.
KTR alleged that the government is recklessly deploying bulldozers, destroying trees, and displacing wildlife to facilitate commercial projects.
He questioned the urgency behind turning a green haven into a Rs 30,000 crore concrete jungle and warned of severe environmental consequences for Western Hyderabad.
He emphasised that the area, including Gachibowli and the Financial District, has already lost much of its greenery, and the destruction of HCU’s land without an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would be a crime against the city’s future. He cautioned that Hyderabad could face an environmental crisis similar to Delhi, where air quality has drastically deteriorated.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi, KTR pointed out his past protests against deforestation in Mumbai and Chhattisgarh but questioned his inaction on HCU’s land issue.
He asked why Gandhi remained silent when his own party’s government was allegedly brutalizing students and damaging the environment. He further challenged Gandhi, asking whether he was unaware of the destruction and violence or simply choosing to ignore it.
KTR highlighted HCU’s historical importance, calling it a “beacon of excellence” established after Telangana’s first agitation. He criticised the Congress government’s alleged attempt to commercialize 400 acres originally meant for sports facilities, accusing it of prioritizing financial interests over academic integrity.
He alleged that the government, instead of building stadiums and training centers as originally planned, was looking to develop real estate, turning a valuable educational space into another commercial hub. He also referenced Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s pre-election remarks about real estate development, calling the government obsessed with asset sales and accumulating debt.
Condemning the police crackdown, KTR alleged that officers were sent onto the university campus without the Vice-Chancellor’s approval. He claimed that female students were mishandled, their clothes torn, and that two students had been arrested and detained without transparency.
He demanded that the government immediately disclose their whereabouts and called upon the Director General of Police (DGP) to intervene. He assured the students that BRS would provide both legal and moral support and vowed to take the issue to Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, and the public sphere to hold the Congress government accountable.
The BRS leader questioned the logic of selling HCU’s 400 acres when the government claims to have access to 45,000 acres for projects like Future City and Pharma City.
He asked why such a small but ecologically and academically significant parcel of land was being targeted so aggressively. He urged all political parties, including the BJP, to take a clear stance on the issue.
Additionally, he called upon HCU alumni serving in the government, including ministers Bhatti Vikramarka and Sridhar Babu, to stand up for the students and support their cause.
