Legislation on anvil denying bail to repeated drug offenders: Himachal CM

Shimla, Mar 19 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated in the state assembly on Wednesday that his government is working on a new Anti-drug Act to ensure a person found repeatedly violating the NDPS act would not succeed in getting bail.
Replying to a query raised by the members, the Chief Minister said properties belonging to 17 drug peddlers in the state have been attached and a building constructed by one peddler by selling Chitta has been demolished.
He said three drug peddlers who are engaged in the drug routes from Firojpure-Nurpoor-Kullu-Anni were detained after enforcing effective implementation of PIT NDPS act and the government has ensured that habitual offenders of NDPS act cannot evade the law. "We have enforced the act strongly by detaining many drug dealers to stop their drug business by keeping them inside the bar for long," he said.
''There are several cases in which a person booked after the seizure of a small quantity like one gram of Chitta are getting bail from the court time and again and they are reengaged in the cartel by exploiting the legal remedy. No drug peddler would succeed to get bail if one is found in violation of NDPS act more than one time as a new act is on the anvil and would be tabled in the Council of Minister meeting today,'' the Chief Minister informed the House.
''Around 70 government employees found involved in the Chitta business are being dealt with heavily by bringing new legislation. The special task force would be constituted by the government to ensure community participation of people to curb the menace. Now parents and relatives of the drug victims are coming forward openly to take the drug cartel head-on as this crime has shackleed the basic fabric of the society within.'' said Sukhu, who holds the portfolio of home.
He sought assistance from all members of the assembly to desist from supporting drug peddlers.
Replying to a query, the Chief Minister said police officers who are posted at one place for a long time and are dealing with drug abuse but giving safe escape to the drug peddlers should have been replaced to control the menace.
He said the government would not harass the victims of drug abuse who get trapped in the network by providing rehabilitation services to them.
He said a new drug rehabilitation centre would be set up at Kotla-Baidh in Solan district.
The Chief Minister said the Union Government is providing vital information to the state government to put the brake son drug peddling which is thriving on the international borders in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. UNI ML ARN SSP
