Maha: CM inaugurates Mumbai’s 1st land-based cable-stayed bridge

Mumbai, May 13 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the long-awaited Mumbai’s first land-based cable-stayed bridge.
The Rs 266 crore project, jointly executed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC or Maha Rail) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), replaces a 115-year-old bridge demolished in February 2022.
Spanning 385 metres with six lanes, the new bridge is designed to ease congestion and enhance east-west connectivity, promising to reduce peak-hour commute time by up to 30 minutes between Byculla and Brittania Industries.
The modern cable-stayed design, featuring a central pylon and architectural LED lighting, is intended to blend functionality with urban aesthetics. The bridge also integrates a Bridge Health Monitoring System for long-term safety.
Despite its engineering achievements, the project has drawn criticism for significant gaps in pedestrian access. Unlike its predecessor, the new bridge lacks footpaths and does not provide direct connectivity to Reay Road railway station, leaving pedestrians with only a circuitous route via Sant Savta Mali Marg in Byculla East.
The bridge’s alignment, reportedly seven feet above the heritage station building, makes future direct access structurally challenging and has prompted comparisons to previous infrastructure misalignments in the city.
Commuters and local residents have voiced frustration over the lack of pedestrian infrastructure.
“There is no access point from the bridge to Reay Road station, which people have had for decades,” said a Byculla resident.
Activists argue the project prioritises vehicles over the needs of rail commuters and pedestrians.
While motorists will benefit immediately from the new bridge, the Central Railway officials have proposed constructing a foot overbridge with an integrated ticket counter to restore direct pedestrian access, but the BMC has yet to issue a formal response regarding these planning shortcomings.
In the same ceremony, Chief Minister Fadnavis also remotely inaugurated a new road overbridge at Titwala, 65 kilometres from Mumbai, further enhancing regional connectivity.
As Mumbai’s traffic landscape evolves, the Reay Road bridge stands as both a symbol of progress and a reminder of the ongoing need for inclusive, multi-modal infrastructure.
