Markets in Shillong shutdown in protest of Pahalgam terror attack

Shillong, Apr 28 (UNI) Shops and other commercial establishments remained shut here in Meghalaya on Monday in protest against the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Twenty-six people, mostly tourists, were killed and several others were injured as Pakistan-sponsored terrorists opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22.
The shutdown was called by Shillong Citizen’s Forum and supported by the Barabazar Merchants and Shopkeepers Association, which had urged all its members to voluntarily close their establishments as a mark of solidarity and to condemn the brutal attack.
“The shutdown was not enforced, but the shopkeepers had voluntarily closed their for day as a mark of protest against terror attack,” the Shillong Citizen’s Forum said.
On Sunday, the Shillong Citizen’s Forum held a candlelight vigil in-front of the old Meghalaya Legislative Assembly at Khyndai Lad to pay tributes to the victims of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The protestors raised slogans of "Pakistan Murdabad", "Atankwad Murdabad", "Bharat Mata Jai" and “Vande Mataram”.
However, the solidarity shutdown of shops and establishments has drawn criticism and opposition from several sections of society, including the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress (MPMC) and the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), saying that it has affected
“A closure of this nature will only worsen their struggles, depriving many of their daily means of sustenance and access to essential commodities,” MPMC President, Joplyn Scott Shylla stated in a letter District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, R.M. Kurbah.
On the other hand, the Meghalaya BJP Mahila Morcha has criticised the Mahila Congress for questioning the shutdown called by businesses in Greater Shillong in protest against the terror attack.
“The shutdown of businesses in Greater Shillong is meant to be voluntary, an act of solidarity with the grieving families who lost their loved ones in the terrorist act. Congress, however, is so far removed from the nation's sentiment that it has no problems with opposing an act that reflects India's collective sorrow. Which essentially proves the party's anti people credentials,” Meghalaya BJP Mahila Morcha President, Susuki Pariat, said.
