Massive fire erupts in HP

Baddi (HP), Apr 24 (UNI) A massive fire broke out on Thursday at a scrap godown located on Chakka Road in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh after a local resident reportedly set ablaze a heap of farm residue in a nearby field.
Strong winds quickly fanned the flames, spreading the fire from the field to the godown, which was in the process of being vacated.
The blaze intensified rapidly due to the presence of highly inflammable materials lying outside the godown, including chemical-laced drums, corrugated boxes, plastics, and metals like copper and aluminium. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the area, sending thick black plumes of smoke billowing into the sky and severely deteriorating the already poor air quality in the region.
Three fire tenders from Baddi and two from Nalagarh were pressed into service to contain the inferno. Santosh Sharma, Commandant of the Home Guards, confirmed that firefighting teams battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though the extent of property damage is yet to be assessed.
Baddi, a major industrial hub, has long grappled with environmental issues, and incidents like this highlight the murky and unregulated nature of the local scrap trade. The demand for industrial scrap remains high, as its by-products are widely used across sectors, but improper handling and storage continue to pose serious risks.
Thursday’s incident is a stark reminder of the fragile balance between industrial growth and environmental safety. With thick smoke clouding the skies and toxic fumes spreading across the township, residents are once again left gasping for clean air in one of India’s dustiest and most polluted industrial zones. Authorities have promised a thorough investigation into the matter.
