Meghalaya police nab family of five Bangladeshi nationals

Shillong, May 19 (UNI) Meghalaya Police on Monday arrested a family of five Bangladeshi nationals at Byrnihat area in Ri-Bhoi district while they were attempting to return to Bangladesh via Shillong.
The detained Bangladeshi nationals Hafix Sigdah (56), his wife Ujala Begum (35), and their three children: Harim Sigdah, Lejaa Khatun, and Alina Khatun, had entered India illegally in 2024 and stayed in Gujarat, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, the district police chief of Ri-Bhoi, said.
“They travelled in train from Gujarat to Guwahati railway station in Assam and later boarded a tourist vehicle without valid documentation to Shillong,” he said.
During the routine Naka Checking operation at Byrnihat around 7 am, police stopped the vehicle for inspection.
Upon questioning, Rathore said the passengers failed to produce any valid travel documents, raising suspicion.
Further investigation revealed their illegal entry into India and plans to cross back into Bangladesh without proper authorisation, he said.
Police have registered a case against the five Bangladeshi nationals, and they have been produced before the court. UNI RRK SSP
