Meghalaya’s Wangala dance to be showcase at WAVES Summit

Shillong, Apr 30 (UNI) Meghalaya’s colourful Wangala dance, an energetic and rhythmic tribute to the sun god, would be showcased at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 together with other cultural dances of the northeast.
Wangala dance is a traditional harvest dance of the tribal Garo community. It is performedperformed with traditional drums and costumes.
The dance reflects the agricultural traditions of the Garo community and promises to be a standout moment in the festival’s cultural journey.
WAVES is a four-day cultural extravaganza running from May 1–4, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai.
The cultural spotlight will be on Northeast India, presenting a rare and immersive showcase of the region’s rich artistic heritage and traditions.
The theme of the event is “Connecting Creators, Connecting Countries.” The cultural programme includes mesmerizing performances from all eight northeastern states, offering audiences a unique journey through India’s diverse and vibrant cultural mosaic.
Wangla dance would be showcased together with the Sattriya dance by the Sattriya Kendra, Guwahati, celebratory tribal Gumrag harvest dance, Tamang Selo and the majestic Singhi Chham of Sikkim, Tripura’s famed Hojagiri dance and Manipur’s refined Manipuri dance recital by the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipuri Dance Academy, an official statement said.
Moreover, Mizoram’s Cheraw, popularly known as the bamboo dance, will offer a dynamic visual treat of coordination and rhythm, while Arunachal Pradesh will present the elegant Kaa Kingnara Kingnari, a peacock-inspired dance of mythic grace.
Nagaland will open the cultural celebrations with the soulful harmonies of the Tetseo Sisters, preserving the Li folk tradition in the poetic Chokri dialect, along with Nzanta — a graceful group performance by the women of the Lotha Naga tribe.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Ministry of Culture, the Government of Maharashtra, and others.
