NCST moots alternative to jhum cultivation, calls for Hindi promotion in Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 30 (UNI) Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Antar Singh Arya has called for the gradual phasing out of jhum or shifting cultivation in Mizoram, advocating for the formulation of a pilot project to introduce more sustainable farming practices with reduced environmental impact.
Arya made the remark during a review meeting convened in Aizawl on Wednesday with senior state officials to assess the implementation of welfare and development schemes for Scheduled Tribes in the state. The NCST delegation, currently on a four-day visit to Mizoram, includes members Nirupam Chakma, Dr Asha Lakra, and Jatothu Hussain.
In addition to the agricultural concerns, the NCST chief urged the Mizoram government to take concrete steps towards promoting Hindi in the state, stressing the importance of linguistic integration. He expressed hope that the language could be popularised through administrative and educational efforts.
During the session, Commission member Nirupam Chakma provided an overview of the NCST's constitutional mandate and shared his observations on the living conditions of tribal communities, especially in the southern districts and border areas of the state. Dr Asha Lakra, another member of the Commission, discussed key issues concerning healthcare, education, and the status of women among the tribal population.
Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, in his address, said that since 94.45% of Mizoram’s population falls under the Scheduled Tribe category, government policies and schemes at both state and central levels are largely tailored to tribal welfare and development. He added that the administration remains committed to inclusive growth and social upliftment.
Director General of Police Anil Shukla reported that there had been no cases of atrocities against Scheduled Tribes in the state in the past three years, underscoring Mizoram's record of communal harmony. Other senior state officials also delivered detailed presentations highlighting the status of STs and outlined ongoing developmental initiatives.
