Mizo voluntary anti-drug squad seizes four kg of heroin, two arrested

Aizawl, April 24 (UNI) In a major anti-narcotics operation, the Central Anti-Drugs Squad (CADS) of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) seized 4.821 kg of heroin worth approximately Rs 1.12 crore and arrested two persons on Thursday at Saitual town in eastern Mizoram.
The heroin was recovered from two vehicles intercepted by the YMA's anti-drug team around 3 am along the Aizawl-Champhai road. Saitual, a key town about 80 km east of the state capital Aizawl, which lies on the route that connects Champhai district with Zokhawthar, an Indian border town adjacent to Myanmar.
The arrested individuals were identified as Thangsangpuia (28), a resident of Farkawn village, currently living in Ramhlun North, Aizawl, and Malsawmdawnga (29), also from Farkawn, but presently staying at Khawmawi—a small village just across the Indo-Myanmar border bridge from Zokhawthar. The two were found transporting heroin concealed inside a Grand i10 (Regd. No. MZ01/J-8898) and an i10 (Regd. No. MZ01/H-6514), respectively.
Thangsangpuia was caught with 2.4 kg of heroin, while Malsawmdawnga had 2.421 kg in his possession. Both confessed to having received the consignment from one Lalhmingmawia, also known as Mawia, a native of Ngur village in Champhai district. The accused is believed to frequently shuttle between Zokhawthar on the Indian side and Khawmawi on the Myanmar side of the border.
The duo told investigators that this was their third consignment run for Lalhmingmawia. On previous occasions, they allegedly trafficked 100 grams and 200 grams each. They were promised Rs 80,000 each to deliver the current load to a non-Mizo contact at Vairengte, a border town between Mizoram and Assam.
CADS officials said Lalhmingmawia had long been under watch, and they were able to track the vehicles based on past surveillance and known registration numbers. While the two carriers were arrested, the alleged kingpin is believed to have fled to Myanmar.
The heroin is suspected to have entered Mizoram through Zokhawthar and was being transported westward when intercepted at Saitual. The operation was supported by local YMA units and members from Aizawl, and the suspects were detained at Manase Home Stay, PWD Veng, Saitual, before being handed over to the state’s Excise & Narcotics Department.
Following the operation, Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga and Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar visited the Central YMA Office in Aizawl and praised the CADS team for their vigilance and successful action.
