Mizoram: Police deny claims of Kuki student leader's arrest at Lengpui airport

Aizawl, May 18 (UNI) Mizoram Police on Sunday dismissed as false the social media rumours claiming that Paojakhup Guite, president of the Delhi chapter of the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO), had been arrested at Lengpui Airport near Aizawl.
Senior police officials clarified that there was no truth to the viral claims, which had been widely circulated across various platforms.
Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) H Ramthlengliana and Aizawl district Superintendent of Police Rex Zarzoliana Vanchhawng both confirmed that they had no information regarding any such arrest at the airport on Saturday.
Officials from the state’s intelligence wing also said they were unaware of any arrest involving Guite, while the Assam Rifles clarified that such matters do not fall within their jurisdiction unless the case pertains to cross--border crimes.
“It is not our mandate to arrest individuals named in state police cases unless it concerns an international border offence,” an Assam Rifles official said.
The arrest rumour emerged following the registration of a criminal case against Guite at Churachandpur Police Station in Manipur. The case was filed after a video surfaced online in which Guite purportedly warned members of the Meitei community not to cross the buffer zone to attend the upcoming Shirui Lily Festival in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
In response to the FIR, the Kuki Inpi issued a press release strongly condemning the move. The apex tribal body expressed “deep concern” over the filing of the case, calling it “partial, discriminatory, and deeply biased against the Kuki-Zo people.”
The organisation further claimed that the voices of the Kuki-Zo community continue to be marginalised in the context of the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur.
The Shirui Lily Festival, a cultural event held annually in Ukhrul, has taken on heightened sensitivity this year due to the continued ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur.
