New state-of-the-art microbiology labs to be set up in five cities of UP

Lucknow, May 16 (UNI) After Lucknow and Meerut, microbiology labs are now being set up in major districts like Varanasi, Kanpur, Mirzapur, Bareilly and Aligarh, which will not only be useful for scientific testing of the quality of food and drug products, but will also enable quick and accurate action in matters related to public health.
Special Secretary, Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, Rekha Singh Chauhan said that the work of the microbiology lab built in Varanasi has been completed and will start operating from May 31. "This will prove to be a milestone for Purvanchal, as now the citizens of this region will not have to depend on other cities or states for tests related to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and micro pathogens," she said.
She said that apart from this, the budget has been approved by FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) for setting up similar state-of-the-art microbiology labs in Kanpur, Mirzapur, Bareilly, and Aligarh. "The tender process is going on, and construction work will start soon. The department aims to make microbiology labs fully functional in all these districts by March 2026," she said.
Through these laboratories, now scientific testing of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, microtoxins, and fungus present in fruits, vegetables, milk, curd, cheese, spices, and other food items will be possible at the local level in the state itself.
Similarly, testing of the purity and effectiveness of medicines can also be done in these labs. This will not only save time but will also increase the self-reliance capacity of the state.
