Tripura to host civil defence mock drill on Wednesday

Agartala, May 6 (UNI) As part of nationwide Civil Defence Mock Drill, the Tripura government has decided to hold it on Wednesday across the state from 4 pm, which last happened during Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971 that too against Pakistan.
The district administrations have notified the details of the civilian response during the mock drill, which will be performed by the citizens in case of emergency. As tensions escalate sharply following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, the full-scale nationwide civil defence drills is a clear signal that India is bracing for a potential conflict with Pakistan.
The state disaster management authority held a preparatory meeting with all eight District Magistrates, disaster response teams and civil administration to conduct the mock drill successfully to make the people acquainted with the wartime situation in case of emergency.
Officials said Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday asked all the state governments to host mock drills across vulnerable 244 districts to evaluate civil defence preparedness and train civilians and students in civil defence techniques, equipping them to respond effectively in aerial strikes or missile attacks.
The mock drill attempts to get civilians accustomed to crash blackouts across urban areas, aimed at denying visibility to potential enemy reconnaissance during aerial attack. Also, train the camouflaging of strategic installations, a classic wartime measure to shield vital assets such as power plants, communication hubs, and military infrastructure, evacuation drills and shelter coordination, designed to ensure mass civilian movement and safety in case of escalation.
Tripura government has planned to conduct the exercise up to the village level. The primary objective of the mock drill is to assess the effectiveness of air raid warning systems, operationalization of Hotline or Radio Communication Links with the Indian Air Force, as well as to test the functionality of control rooms.
The drills will include the rare activation of air raid sirens—an unmistakable indicator of wartime posture and anticipation of cross-border hostilities. These actions evoke scenes reminiscent of past Indo-Pakistani war periods, particularly 1971 conflict between East Pakistan and West Pakistan, where civilian preparedness played a key role in national defence strategy.
