NEHU Professor assaulted by students in Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 25 (UNI) An Assistant Professor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) here in Meghalaya was brutally assaulted inside his office chamber allegedly by a group of students.
Alok Singh, who is teaching Hindi in NEHU, has filed an FIR accusing the President of NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU) together with five other accomplices brutally assaulted him inside his office at 4.45 pm on Thursday.
“The President of NEHUSU along with five accomplices forcibly locked me inside my chamber in the department. During this incident they physically assaulted me and threatened to kill me by holding a scissor to my neck,” Singh stated in his FIR. Singh was later admitted in Civil Hospital to nurse his wounds.
The assailants also snatched the mobile phone of Singh and unplugged his laptop so that none of the incident could be recorded in any way.
“I can identify the perpetrators of the crime as they are students of the university,” Singh said while demanding justice.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya police have registered a criminal case based on the FIR lodged by Singh and investigation into the alleged assault is on.
NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun was unavailable for comment when contacted by UNI.
The NEHU administration has decided to constitute an inquiry committee to probe into Singh’s assault.
“On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Incharge Prof SM Sungoh and the administration, the university strongly condemns any act of violence in the university campus,” NEHU Spokesperson, Dr. Davidson Pyngrope told reporters.
Terming the attack on Singh as “cowardly act of violence”, the faculty members of NEHU said that it stand with Dr Alok Singh and urged the “university authorities, central government, and law enforcement agencies, to take appropriate action without delay and miscreants shall be behind the bars for justice.”
“We want to express our solidarity with him and in no way we will be afraid of such criminals who want to defame the University by violating the established rules, regulations, statues and ordinances. We are aware of and have witnessed the activities and mode of operation of such criminals during the past few months. They claim to be the NEHUSU office bearers. We condemn this cowardly act of violence,” a statement from the teachers said.
