Meghalaya Dy CM chairs review meeting on fencing of India-Bangladesh border

Shillong, May 6 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday chaired a high-level review meeting with Border Security Force (BSF), National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and State government officials over the remaining 49 km unfenced border with Bangladesh.


During the meeting, Tynsong directed Deputy Commissioners of Khasi and Jaintia Hills region to resolve the land issue and expedite the completion of border fencing.


“I had a review meeting of the status of the border fencing with the Deputy Commissioners in the presence of the BSF and NBCC officials. I have instructed the Deputy Commissioners to resolve the land issue. Hopefully, the matter will be sorted out in a few weeks from now,” Tynsong told reporters.

"I have directed Deputy Commissioners to take up this matter (land issue) on a top most priority as we all know that the situation in Bangladesh is not conducive,” he further added.

Meghalaya shares a 443-km border with Bangladesh, of which 49.216 km is unfenced and has terrain difficult to patrol.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had directed the Meghalaya government to expedite fencing work as the area was prone to infiltration by militants and illegal migration.

“Construction of fencing is an important security measure for securing the border. It can prevent infiltration of migrants and address the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals and trafficking,” an MHA official had told UNI.

Tynsong said that the Meghalaya government was also keen to completely fence the international border to thwart cross-border criminal activities.

“We really wanted to complete those portions where the fencing is incomplete at the earliest possible so that the state and central agencies including BSF can easily monitor the border and ensure safety of our people,” Tynsong said.

On the demand of the landowner in the border to erect the fencing from zero line, the Deputy Chief Minister informed that the State government had already written to the Ministry of Home Affairs on the matter.

“As per norms, international boundary should be within 150 yards, however, few stretches where ultimately if the fencing has to go as per this then some villages will have to be treated outside the fence. We have written a letter to the MHA to consider those points or those particular locations where we have to make sure the village or the habitation it should be within the fencing. We have written a letter to the MHA and the MHA has also considered this and more challenges are there as two-three places are also there where we are still awaiting the approval of the MHA,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tynsong said that the situation along the India-Bangladesh border “as of now is under control”.

“All different agencies are on the grassroot and the activities, whatever required to be done from the state government as well as from the central government agencies, they are on the ground and we will make sure the safety and security of our people is intact,” he said

“We have already instructed that no person should illegally bring in the Bangladeshi to India until they have all necessary documents. That is the standing order and we continue to make sure it should not happen,” Tynsong added. UNI RRK AKT SSP
