Easter celebrated across Meghalaya

Shillong, Apr 20 (UNI) Candlelight processions, baptism of newborns and colourful Easter eggs and buns were the hallmark of the day as Christians in Meghalaya on Sunday joined their brethren the world over in celebrating Easter.

Cathedrals and churches across this Christian-majority state were thronged by people for special mass and other celebratory events.

Easter marks the end of the period of Lent or suffering and it is believed that Jesus Christ was resurrected after his crucifixion on Good Friday.

Bishops led the services and delivered sermons in various cathedrals and churches of different Christian denominations in the city.

Pascal commemoration in many parishes was marked with candlelight processions and baptism of newborn children.

Leaders of various political parties have greeted the Christians on the occasion of Easter.

Meghalaya Governor C H Vijayashankar, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas Sangma greeted people on the occasion of Easter Sunday.

Nearly 75 percent of Meghalaya’s three million populations are Christians.
