Cultural Forum Manipur remembers doyen of Manipuri literature, Khelchandra

Imphal, May 13 (UNI) The Cultural Forum, Manipur paid tributes to Pandit Ningthoukhongjam Khelchandra on his 108th birth anniversary at the State Central Library here on Tuesday.
Prof Koijam Shantibala, President of the Forum, said Khelchandra’s contributions are immense as he translated large numbers of ancient Manipuri texts into modern Manipuri. Besides, Khelchandra worked as a pioneer historian and linguist by writing Manipuri history from a new perspective. His works in English and Manipuri are so vast that Manipur may not get another person like him.
Prof Huirem Bihari, former President of the Forum, said Khelchandra collected large numbers of ancient texts and translated them into English and Manipuri and analysed the texts. He further said the works of Khelchandra, including the Cheitharol Kumbaba which chronicles the history of Manipur from 33 AD till the first half of 20th century have no parallel in human history, and Khelchandra had the rare quality of being a historian, linguist, astrologer, cultural activist, martial artist .
Naoroibam Indramani , cultural activist presented a paper on the life and works of Pandit Khelchandra.
