Chin refugees in Delhi admit concerns over drug links, pledge cooperation with Mizoram

Aizawl, Apr 27 (UNI) Leaders of the Chin Refugee Community (CRC) based in Delhi have voiced regret over reports that some Chin refugees sheltering in Mizoram have been involved in drug trafficking, and vowed to strengthen efforts to ensure that refugees stay away from illegal activities.
The assurance came during a meeting between a 12-member delegation from the CRC and Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha MP Richard Vanlalhmangaiha at his residence in Delhi on Saturday.
During the interaction, Vanlalhmangaiha urged the refugee leaders to foster closer cooperation with both the Mizoram government and its citizens, emphasising that the Chin people are considered kin by the Mizo population.
The CRC representatives also used the occasion to highlight the numerous hardships facing Chin refugees living in the national capital.
In response, Vanlalhmangaiha assured them that he would explore possible avenues to address their grievances. Over 7,000 Chin refugees have sought shelter in Delhi since fleeing the military crackdown in Myanmar that followed the February 2021 coup.
According to the refugee leaders, a staggering 90 percent of Chin refugees in Delhi possess only temporary identity documents. They are facing a dire lack of security across vital sectors such as healthcare, education, and employment. Many have lost jobs due to the absence of formal protection mechanisms, while financially struggling families have been forced to pull children out of schools.
"There is no reliable access to jobs, education, healthcare or livelihoods for Chin refugees in Delhi," a CRC leader said. He added that refugees holding temporary IDs have been subjected to intimidation, even during religious gatherings, and face the constant threat of deportation.
Particularly vulnerable are refugees who have been living in India for more than four years or those suffering from serious health problems, he said.
India currently hosts an estimated 60,000 refugees from Myanmar, of whom more than 33,000 are residing in Mizoram.
