Mizoram Catholics to bid farewell to Pope Francis with statewide requiem masses

Aizawl, Apr 25 (UNI) Catholic faithful across Mizoram will gather in prayer this Saturday to pay their final respects to Pope Francis, with special requiem masses scheduled in all parishes and a central memorial service to be held at Christ the King Cathedral in Kulikawn, Aizawl.
The Diocese of Aizawl announced the observance in solidarity with the global Catholic community as the Vatican prepares for the funeral of Pope Francis, who passed away earlier this week. His funeral will be conducted at St. Peter’s Square in Rome at 10 a.m. local time, corresponding to 1:30 p.m. Indian Standard Time on April 26.
“In union with the universal Church, we mourn the passing of our Holy Father Pope Francis and entrust his soul to the loving arms of the Eternal Father,” said Father Jerome Vungbiakdika, secretary to the Bishop of Aizawl Diocese. He stated that a solemn Requiem Mass would be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Cathedral, presided over by the Most Rev. Stephen Rotluanga, Bishop of Aizawl.
Father Vungbiakdika extended an open invitation to all clergy, religious orders, and lay members across the state to prioritise their attendance at the requiem service, calling it an important moment of shared grief and reverence.
“On behalf of the Bishop, I urge all members of the Church in Mizoram to set aside their regular duties on this day and join in this sacred observance,” he said, noting the significance of the farewell mass for the faithful in the region.
For those unable to attend the central service in Aizawl, parish priests have been asked to conduct suitable liturgical services — including Holy Mass or prayer gatherings — in their respective parishes and substations to ensure that no member of the Church is left out of the collective act of mourning.
The Diocese’s announcement marks Mizoram’s participation in a global outpouring of grief and tribute following the death of the 266th Pope, whose papacy was marked by efforts to reform the Church and advocate for compassion, humility, and social justice.
