CISF assumes full control of Lengpui Airport security operations

Aizawl, Apr 24 (UNI) The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) formally assumed full responsibility for the security of Mizoram’s Lengpui Airport on Thursday following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
A formal reception was held at the airport terminal, where Mizoram Director General of Police (DGP) Anil Shukla attended as the chief guest to mark the occasion.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shukla highlighted the significance of Lengpui Airport as Mizoram’s primary air gateway connecting the state to the rest of India and beyond. He described the CISF takeover as a crucial milestone not only for the state’s aviation security but also for regional stability in the North East.
“The deployment of CISF will ease the burden on our state police and allow them to focus on other pressing concerns. While Mizoram has largely remained peaceful, the sharp increase in drug trafficking poses new challenges that require a broader security apparatus,” he stated.
With this development, Lengpui becomes the 69th airport in the country where the CISF has been entrusted with full security responsibilities. Initially, 121 CISF personnel, led by a Deputy Commandant, will be stationed at the facility, with a total sanctioned strength of 214. Their duties will cover all aspects of airport security.
Meanwhile, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who had earlier been managing airport security along with the Mizoram police, were officially withdrawn early Thursday. Approximately 70 state police officers assigned to the airport also began vacating the premises. However, a team of around eight state police personnel will continue to be stationed at the airport to handle Inner Line Permit (ILP) verification and related duties.
The transition marks a significant shift in the airport's security management since its inauguration in December 1998 by then Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani. For over two decades, the responsibility had been shared between the CRPF and state police.
Though Lengpui Airport has had no history of hijacking incidents barring a single high-profile case in 2000, the DGP stressed the need for robust preventive mechanisms. That year, authorities arrested Grinder Muivah, nephew of NSCN (I-M) leader Thuingaleng Muivah, and a woman identified as Ranju Rangan, who was allegedly impersonating an official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The duo were suspected of plotting to hijack a flight to press for the release of Muivah, then imprisoned in Bangkok.
In terms of air safety incidents, the airport — located on a challenging table-top runway — has seen two runway excursions. A Cessna Caravan operated by North East Shuttle skidded in 2011, followed more recently by an incident involving a Myanmar military aircraft in 2024.
Authorities expressed confidence that the induction of the CISF would not only enhance overall security but also align Lengpui Airport with national standards followed at other major airports across the country.
