Chandigarh, April 22 (UNI) The Counter Intelligence Amritsar successfully uncovered an illegal weapon smuggling module with links extending to the United States and apprehended Gurwinder Singh alias Guri from Ludhiana. The police recovered 5 pistols from his possession.
DGP Punjab Gaurav Yadav said Gurwinder Singh was acting under the directions of Gurlal Singh and Vipul Sharma, both currently residing in the USA, who are key handlers in the network.
A preliminary investigation revealed Gurwinder Singh is the brother-in-law of Hardeep Singh, a known drug smuggler who fled to the US in 2022 after being arrested in a case. Gurlal and Hardeep appear to have formed an alliance abroad and are operating a transnational weapon smuggling ring using local associates in Punjab, said the DGP.
He said an FIR has been registered in Amritsar. Further investigation is being carried out to identify all linkages among the gang members.
In another case, Tarn Taran police foiled a major weapons smuggling module by arresting two persons, Sukhdev Singh alias Dev and Swarn Kumar alias Ghoda, near Sarai Amanat Khan in TarnTaran district.
DGP Yadav said that the accused Sukhdev Singh opened fire on the police and sustained a bullet
injury in the retaliatory action. He was admitted to Civil Hospital, Tarn Taran.
The police recovered One Glock 9MM and one PX5 .30 calibre pistol, 7 live cartridges, and 3
empty shells from them.
He said that the initial probe reveals the accused were in direct contact with Pakistan-based smugglers and were supplying arms in Tarn Taran and adjoining districts.
