Hyderabad, Feb 22 (UNI) At least eight workers were trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel and three others seriously injured after its roof collapsed on a three meter stretch near Domalapenta in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana on Saturday.
The incident took place at the 14th-kilometer mark of the left tunnel, where ongoing construction work had started just four days ago.
Around 50 workers were present in the tunnel during the first shift when the roof collapsed at approximately 0830 hours. While 42 workers managed to escape, eight others were trapped in the tunnel.
Officials from the irrigation department and police have launched rescue operations to locate and save the workers.
Gurjeet Singh (Punjab), Sanneet Singh (Jammu & Kashmir), Srinivasulu (UP), Manoj Rubena (UP), Sandeep (Jharkhand), Santosh (Jharkhand), and Jatka Hiran (Jharkhand), are among those trapped.
Three others who sustained serious injuries have been rescued and taken to nearby Genco hospital for treatment.
State Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, along with senior officials, visited the site to assess the situation and oversee rescue efforts.
The SLBC tunnel project is crucial for providing irrigation and drinking water to Nalgonda district through a tunnel connecting the Srisailam backwaters.
Further investigation is underway to determine the cause of the roof collapse, official sources said.
