202 mt of diaphragm wall construction completed: Minister

Rajahmundry, Apr 21 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Water Resources Development Nimmala Ramanaidu has made it clear that 202 meters of new diaphragm wall of the Polavaram project has been constructed so far.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the Minister said that parallel to the diaphragm wall, the ECRF workers are also being carried out at the project. The diaphragm wall was destroyed by heavy floods due to the indifference of the YSRCP regime, he charged.

“The construction of a new diaphragm wall began on January 18 at an estimated cost of Rs 990 crore. The diaphragm wall construction works are being carried out expeditiously using two cutters and two grabbers. One more cutter will be available on April 30, and with this, the works will be further speeded up,” the Minister revealed. "The diaphragm wall works will be completed by the end of December 2025," the Minister announced.

In order to continue the project works even in the rainy season and to strengthen the upper cofferdam, the buttress dam works would be completed by the end of May, 2025. Without waiting for the completion of the diaphragm wall, the construction of ECRF dam at Gap-1, began in April, 2025, he said, adding that the ECRF dam works at the Gap-2 would be launched by November 30, 2025 as per the Chief Minister's directions.

“The government has aimed to complete the Polavaram project works by December 2027. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the project works recently and directed to expedite the works as Godavari Pushkarams will be held in 2027. The Chief Minister also ordered the officials concerned to ensure that the Polavaram project works are completed before the Godavari Pushkarams,” he acknowledged.

Minister Ramanaidu slammed the YSRCP regime stating that it did not carry out any work in the Polavaram project Left Canal during the five years.

The coalition government had invited tenders for the left canal works at a cost of Rs 1200 crore and workers are being carried out expeditiously now. The flood water of Godavari would be diverted to the north AP districts through the Sujala Sravanthi project, he noted. Minister Kandula Durgesh, MLAs Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary and Battula Balaramakrishna were present.
