Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill passed in Legislative Council

Bengaluru, Mar 13 (UNI) The Karnataka Legislative Council has passed the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024, which seeks to decentralise administration by dividing Bengaluru into multiple city corporations.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, defending the bill on Wednesday, likened the initiative to the foundational efforts of Kempegowda, the city’s founder, stating that the reforms aim to modernise governance in line with Bengaluru’s exponential growth.
As part of the reforms, a self-declaration scheme for building plan approvals has been introduced. However, no modifications have been made to Article 74. The government has also assured financial support for economically weaker local bodies, as revenue transfers between them remain unfeasible.
