TN Cyber Crime Wing police issues public alert on Ads scam

Chennai, Mar 7 (UNI) The Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu police
has issued a public alert on Ads to prevent gullible people from falling
prey to it as Artificial Intelligence and IoT has been transforming the life
could be highly misleading in many ways.
A release from Cyber Crime Wing Headquarters here said technology
has provided most sophisticated life to all people in the world.
Yet anything overdosed is harmful, it said.
"The coming of Artificial Intelligence and IoT is transforming the way we
live in and thereby revolutionising industries. However, AI can be highly
misleading in many ways", it added.
Recently, many Ads are being promoted in the face of some
renowned celebrities or business tycoons, which . appear to be
real yet they are not.
These Ads reach one’s inbox based on the social engineering
of past browsing history of the user and his social media activity.
Stating that AI algorithms analyse all those data and suggest Ads
that attracts one, the release said these technologies track the
emotional response and state of mind of the people, triggering
to take impulsive decisions.
All these Ads are accompanied by some testimonials to gain
trust of viewers and thereby persuades users to make purchases
or do investments.
They prey on the human psychology of greediness, luring them
to invest without leaving space for any suspicion. These scams
are promoted basically by Ads in the popular websites,
Whats-App, Telegram, etc.
AI is used to create realistic deep fake videos where celebrities
or influencers are shown endorsing a product/App, even if they
never actually did.
These fake testimonials establish credibility and manipulate
potential investors into thinking that the opportunity is legitimate.
Citing an incident, the release said, recently, singer Shreya
Ghosal’s interview is tailored and edited to make it appear
real promoting an online investment. These Ads are fabricated
to be "too-good-to-be-true" opportunities, complete with fake
glowing reviews to further lure you in.
In this case a fraudulent website of Indian Express is created
which look legitimate to promote the trade investments promoted
by singer Shreya Ghosal in an interview.
However, all these are completely fake. The URLs will reveal its
falseness.
In an advisory to public, the Cyber Crime police asked them
to do their own research before making any investment as no
legitimate investment platforms promise high guaranteed
returns.
"Look for independent reviews from credible sources, not just
the testimonials shown in the ads. Don’t trust celebrity or influencer
endorsements without verifying that they are real as many scams
use deepfake technology or paid promotions", it said.
While advising the people to look for HTTPS and secure payment
options when investing online, it said lack of proper security measures
could be a sign that a website is fraudulent.
It advised the public that if they have fallen victim to such scams, they
should dial 1930 for the toll-free assistance provided by Cyber Crime
Wing or register their complainant online.
