Ktk Ex-Dy CM alleges massive Rs 15,000 cr scam in smart meter project

Bengaluru, Apr 22 (UNI) Senior BJP leader and former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan on Tuesday alleged a massive Rs 15,000 crore scam in the smart meter project undertaken by the state government, and called it one of the biggest financial irregularities in the energy sector.
Dr Narayan said that in addition to filing a formal complaint under the Prevention of Corruption Act with the Superintendent of Police in the Lokayukta office, a petition has also been submitted to the Principal Auditor General to audit the entire tendering and implementation process of the smart meter project.
He urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action against the officials and Minister involved.
Addressing mediapersons, the former Deputy Chief Minister accused the Congress-led state government of turning a blind eye to repeated warnings about irregularities in the smart meter scheme. “Despite consistently raising concerns with the Energy Department and the Minister concerned, no action has been taken. This seems to be a deliberate attempt to exploit the project for monetary gain,” he said.
To mobilise public opinion, Dr Narayan announced the launch of an online signature campaign. “We want people to be aware of the misuse of public funds and participate in this democratic exercise to put pressure on the government and constitutional authorities to act,” he said.
The Senior BJP leader also criticised the government over steep hikes in electricity tariffs, claiming that power rates have surged by over 100 per cent since the Congress came to power. “While the cost of generation is going down, the charges imposed on consumers are skyrocketing — including fixed charges per kilowatt, fuel adjustment charges, and per-unit costs. This is nothing but organised loot,” he alleged.
Dr Narayan said the people of Karnataka are “fed up with the rampant corruption” and called on citizens to unite in demanding transparency and accountability in governance.
