Vijayendra accuses Cong of violating Ambedkar principles

Bengaluru, Apr 14 (UNI) Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa on Monday sharply criticised the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the state, accusing it of undermining the principles laid out by Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
He specifically targeted the state's extension of religion-based reservations in government contracts, calling it unconstitutional.
"Congress leaders often claim to follow Dr BR Ambedkar, but in reality, they are going against the Constitution,'' Yediyurappa told reporters on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti at state party headquarters here.
"There is no provision in the Constitution for reservation on religious grounds, yet the state government has granted a 4 percent quota to Muslims in government contracts, which is completely unconstitutional and illegal."
Vijayendra added that the BJP had initiated a statewide Jan Jagrana campaign to raise awareness on key issues, including religion-based reservation, misuse of Scheduled Caste Sub Plan (SCSP) and Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) funds, and the escalating prices under the Congress regime. The campaign has already covered nine districts, engaging more than 50,000 people, he claimed.
The Karnataka BJP President also criticised the Congress government for its planned protest against the Centre on April 17, calling it a "diversionary tactic."
He pointed out that while the Narendra Modi government had not raised petrol or diesel taxes in the last 20 months, the Siddaramaiah government hiked fuel VAT by ₹3 on July 20, 2024, and recently increased diesel prices by ₹2.
Vijayendra questioned the efficacy of the state's VAT hike, claiming it was not translating into any visible development or public benefit. "Instead, Karnataka has been turned into an ATM for the Congress high command and the Gandhi family," he alleged.
The BJP leader also criticised the selective distribution of benefits from the state's guarantee schemes, which he claimed were used only during election time. "Where is the money going if it's not benefiting the public?" he asked.
