MPCC chief criticises govt over water shortage in Maha

Mumbai, Apr 21 (UNI) Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Harshvardhan Sapkal on Monday took a swipe at the BJP-led central and the state governments over scarcity of water in the state.
Speaking to reporters here, he recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the Jal Jeevan Mission with a lot of fanfare and said that clean drinking water would be available to every household in the country by 2024.
However, even after 2025, Maharashtra is still parched and thirsty, as corruption in this scheme is taking a toll on women who had to walk long distances for a pot of water, he said.
He alleged that the government makes big announcements, but there is no implementation in reality.
The MPCC chief recalled Modi constantly saying that every household has a tap and every tap has water. For this, the central and state governments started the Jal Jeevan Mission scheme, but the Union Finance Ministry has made admission of corruption in this scheme.
Only officials and contractors have benefited from this scheme, he noted.
Now, the central government has cut the funds for this scheme by 47 percent, so work will not be done due to lack of funds. Due to this, the women's struggle for water will continue for next few years, he added.
