Nicobar Islands receives heavy rainfall, Southwest Monsoon likely to advance into Bay of Bengal

Pune, May 12 (UNI) Fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall was recorded over the Nicobar Islands during the past 24 hours. Rainfall activity over Nicobar Islands is very likely to increase, becoming widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
With the expected continuance of rainfall activity over these areas, conditions are favourable for the advance of the Southwest Monsoon into some parts of Andaman Sea, south Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 13.
Conditions are also becoming favourable for further advance over some parts of south Arabian Sea, Maldives and Comorin area; some more parts of south Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Andaman Sea; and some parts of the central Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 4-5 days, the IMD bulletin said.
Day Temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, costal Odisha; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over Kerala and Mahe; at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal; at isolated places over Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura.
The temperatures were markedly below normal (-5.1 or below) at isolated places west Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at isolated places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttarakhand.
The temperatures were below normal (-1.6°C to - 3.0°C) at most places over Telangana; at many places over north interior Karnataka; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh; at isolated places over west Uttar Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Marathwada, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi.
The rest of the country experienced normal temperatures.
On Sunday, the highest maximum temperature of 43.2°C was reported at Sambalpur (Odisha) in the country.
Hailstorms were reported at isolated places over Jammu-Kashmir, Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya.
Rain or thundershowers have occurred at most places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and at many places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and at a few places in Assam and Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh, Kerala and Lakshadweep.
Rain and thunderstorms have also occurred at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat region, Saurashtra and Kutch, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka and interior Karnataka, the IMD said.
