Elections in Bangladesh will be free and fair, CA Yunus tells US Senator

Dhaka, Mar 19 (UNI) Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has assured US Senator Gary Peters that elections in the country will be free, fair, and held in a festive atmosphere, resembling past celebrations, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

He made these remarks during a meeting with the visiting Senator at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday.

"There will be big celebrations on election day, like the ones we have seen in the past," he said.

The Chief Adviser said that if political parties agree to minimal reforms, the government will hold elections in December. However, if the parties demand a larger reform package from the government, the general elections will be held a few months later.

During the hour-long meeting, the two leaders discussed issues of mutual interest and ways to deepen the friendly relations between the two countries.

While answering Senator Peters’ query about the interim government’s reform initiatives, Yunus said that if political parties agree on the proposed reforms by major commissions, they will sign the July Charter.

He emphasized that the July Charter would determine the country’s future course.
