Mumbai, Apr 9 (UNI) The Maharashtra government on Wednesday informed Bombay High Court that no vindictive action has been taken against members of the public who have reposted video clips or re-sung parody songs from comedian Kunal Kamra’s standup comedy show.
A division bench consisting of chief justice Alok Aradhe and Justice M S Karnik disposed of the criminal PIL, filed by city-based law student Harshavardhan Khandekar, urging the court to recognize stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's controversial act as protected under Article 19 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression.
The plea, also argues that Kamra's statements fall within the realm of satire and political criticism, a right safeguarded by Article 19(1)(a).
