People risk lives daily as culvert crumbles in HP village

Chamba, May 1 (UNI) A crumbling culvert over the Sindhari Nala in Sadhari village, located in the remote Pangi Assembly constituency of Himachal Pradesh, has become a symbol of apathy and neglect, posing a daily threat to the lives of hundreds of villagers.
Residents of this isolated region, a part of gram panchayat Shoon, are forced to cross the dangerously dilapidated culvert to access education, healthcare, and ration supplies.
The rising water levels in the drain during the warmer months worsen the situation. With no alternative route, children wade through the swelling stream to reach school, while the elderly and the ailing are carried across the culvert on makeshift arrangements. What should have been a lifeline has now turned into a life-threatening challenge.
Local MLA Dr Janak Raj has strongly complained about the state government’s indifference.
“There is a severe lack of capital investment in remote areas like Pangi. These tribal belts are being punished for their geography. The promises of system change have turned into betrayal,” he said.
Pangi valley, among the remotest regions of Himachal Pradesh, often remains disconnected due to landslides, snow, and flash floods. Despite repeated demands, repairs and development projects in the area remain sluggish. In the absence of proper roads or reliable infrastructure, residents — especially students — risk crossing swollen rivulets every day.
The villagers of Sadhari now demand immediate intervention from the government to reconstruct the culvert and ensure safe passage. As the monsoon approaches, fears mount that the nala may become completely impassable, further isolating this already neglected community.
