Punjab: Police arrest man, his brother for murdering man's wife

Hoshiarpur, Apr 1 (UNI) The police have arrested a man and his younger brother for allegedly murdering the man's wife and staging her death as a suicide in Saidpur village under Chabbewal police station.

Inspector Prabhjot Kaur, Station House Officer (SHO) of Chabbewal police station, stated on Tuesday that a report was received on March 29 about the suspected suicide of 25-year-old Jyoti, wife of Manjit of Saidpur. She was reportedly found hanging from a ceiling fan.

During investigation, it was revealed that Manjit had married Jyoti, daughter of Gurdev of Landran, under Sohana police station in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district, about six years ago.

The couple had three children, Bobby (5), Radhika (4) and Devika (7 months).

It further emerged that Manjit allegedly began harassing and physically assaulting Jyoti some time after their marriage.

On the night of March 28, Manjit, along with his younger brother Nem Chand, allegedly attacked Jyoti with a sickle, hitting her on the head.

The duo then allegedly strangled her to death and later staged the scene as a suicide by hanging her body with a scarf from the ceiling fan.

Police also recovered the murder weapon (sickle) used in the crime.

Both accused, Manjit and Nem Chand, have been arrested and a case of murder has been registered against the siblings.

Further investigation is underway, added Inspector Prabhjot Kaur.
