Purulia MP writes to HC CJ seeking suo motu action on police lathi charge on dismissed teachers

Kolkata, May 17 (UNI) BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato on Saturday wrote to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T. S. Sivagnanam seeking his suo motu action on the Police's "brutal" lathi-charge on protesting dismissed teachers in front of Bikash Bhavan at New Town in the city on Thursday.

"I have written to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court seeking suo motu action on the brutal police crackdown on protesting teachers on May 15, in which over 30 were critically injured," BJP's Lok Sabha Member from Purulia told reporters.

He claimed police brutality on the dismissed teachers, who were seeking reinstatement in their jobs, was an "example that the law, dignity, and democracy were trampled upon". He demanded that " Justice must prevail".

Mahato also alleged that certain TMC leaders had actively participated in attacking the protesting teachers, and the police personnel at the scene failed to intervene or protect the teachers from the attacks.

"Excessive use of force by the police resulted in severe injuries to numerous teachers, as well as police inaction during attacks on the protesters by certain Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders amid the protest," Mahato wrote in his letter to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court.

The protesting teachers had lost their jobs following a Supreme Court order over an alleged cash-for-jobs scam, and cancelling the whole 2016 panel, that has rendered some 26 000 teachers in the government-aided schools jobless. During Thursday's protest, the dismissed teachers broke open the main gate of Bikash Bhavan, the headquarters of the state education department, at New Town, and kept many government officials detained inside the office for over seven hours.

Police finally used lathis, after several requests to the protestors failed to clear the exit routes, to evacuate the besieged government employees.

“The actions of the police appear to have violated several provisions of Indian law, particularly under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and has raised serious concerns about the protection of fundamental rights and the rule of law,” Mahato wrote in his letter.

He also alleged that over 30 teachers sustained critical injuries, including head wounds, broken limbs, eye injuries, and a reported stroke.

"Reports indicate that the police targeted sensitive areas such as the head and private parts, and male officers manhandled female teachers, dragging them and using foul language, actions that suggest a disproportionate and unwarranted use of force,” the BJP MP said.

He also alleged that certain TMC leaders actively participated in attacking the protesting teachers, and the police present at the scene failed to intervene or protect the teachers from these attacks, acting merely as spectators.

He described the police action as a gross violation of impartiality and said it has raised serious questions about the impartiality of law enforcement in the state.
